Custom software for NJIT flexible visual stimulator

Randomized clinical trials report a sustained reduction in symptoms and improvement in vision function for convergence insufficiency patients who participated in vision rehabilitation composed of office and home training. Yet, few studies have systematically investigated the neural and eye movement behavioral changes potentially evoked from vision rehabilitation. This design project sought to develop a flexible software platform that could be easily programmed by non-engineers which could be used in the imaging center or a clinician's office for training. The software creates a user interface written in Visual Basic to create step and ramp stimuli using 512 light emitting diodes. The software reduces processing delays and utilizes an algorithm to generate smooth ramping stimuli that is not commercially available. This instrument is intended to be used by oculomotor scientists to study behavioral changes evoked by repetitive visual stimuli, by imaging scientists to study the cortical centers recruited in generating eye movements and by clinicians as a tool to facilitate rehabilitation of the visual system.
