Design of a compact wideband high-gain MMW antenna based on Fabry-Perot antenna concept

This paper presents a wideband high-gain millimeter-wave (MMW) antenna with a compact, simple and low-profile structure. The design strategy of wideband Fabry-Perot resonator antennas, which have a superstrate with increasing phase in the operating band, has been applied to design the antenna. By truncating the dimension of the superstrate, which is composed of two dielectric slabs, to be about 1.3λ×1.3λ, a bandwidth of about 30% can be achieved. To further increase the size of the upper slab to be about 1.8λ×1.8λ, the directivity or gain can be enhanced, without compromising the bandwidth. An example has been designed at 30-40 GHz to demonstrate the design strategy, which shows a bandwidth of 28% and the gain of 15-17 dBi within the bandwidth.
