The Leader's Contribution to Performance in Cohesive and Uncohesive Task Groups.

Abstract : Four different sets of groups, Army tank crews, B-29 bomber crews, anti-aircraft artillery crews, and creative discussion groups provided data which were analyzed on possible relations between abilities of leaders and members and group effectiveness. The study showed that only in cohesive groups is the leader's ability related to the effectiveness of the group. This relation holds for all types of groups represented in this series of studies. It suggests that the leader's own intellectual or task relevant abilities are not effectively utilized in groups which are not cohesive. (Author)
