A Universal Computer Audiometer for Objective Hearing Testing and Screening

The authors present the results of a project aimed at constructing and implementing a universal screening audiometer. The construction of the device is based on Pocket PC equipped with external small-size hardware unit containing an amplifier and interface unit, co-operating with an OAE/ABR measuring probe. The system allows for measuring otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE), auditory brainstem responses (ABR), as well as pure-tone audiograms. The audiometer is primarily dedicated to hearing screening of newborns and young children. Due to precision an extended measurement capabilities, it can also be applied to audiological testing and diagnosing hearing disorders in both paediatric and adult patients. The audiometer can be remotely controlled via the Internet and allows access to databases in reference centres, which predestines it to telemedical applications. Preliminary results of application of the instrument in hearing testing are presented. Prospective applications in hearing screening programs are described.
