Particle sizing of soot in flat pre-mixed hydrocarbon oxygen flames by light scattering

Combustion of hydrocarbons in premixed flames is not complete under fuel rich conditions. In this case fuel molecules are converted to the stable main products as well as to high molecular weight hydrocarbons and soot particles with about 106 molecular mass units within a few milliseconds. The soot particles form an aerosol within the burnt gases which can be defined by the volume fraction fv, particle number density N and by particle properties, e.g. the moments of the resulting particle size distributions. Soot particles undergo coagulation while simultaneously new particles are formed and the volume fraction of soot also increases due to reactions of gaseous components with the surface of soot particles.
