ACTION OF THE GUT IN SACCOGLOSSUS OTAGOENSIS (HEMICHORDATA: ENTEROPNEUSTA)

Abstract The deep, dorsal groove on the proboscis of Saccoglossus otagoensis (Benham, 1899) may increase efficiency in feeding in this species when compared with other members of the genus (e.g., S. horsti and S. ruber). S. otagoensis appears to be peculiar amongst adult enteropneusts in defaecating pellets rather than long castings. This habit may be associated with the greater mobility and agility of the species compared with mainly burrowing enteropneusts.
