The Successful Design of a Large Diameter Gravity Sewer

This paper presents the case study of the successful design and installation of the City of San Diego's North Mission Valley Interceptor Sewer, Phase 2 (NMVIS2). The NMVIS2 project included over 3,660 m (12,000 ft) of 1,950-mm (78-in.) plastic lined reinforced concrete pipe interceptor sewer and over 2,135 m (7,000 ft) of 300-mm (12-in.) to 900-mm (36-in.) collector sewer pipeline. The NMVIS2 project total construction cost was $20,000,000. This project received the ASCE 1997 Outstanding Civil Engineering Project Award for Wastewater Systems, San Diego, the 1997 Trenchless Technology Project of the Year Award, and the City of San Diego William Earl Hayden Award for Pipelines.
