Internet-based remote access for a manufacturing-oriented teleservice

A manufacturing-oriented teleservice is one of the most promising strategies for next-generation manufacturing (NGM). It takes advantage of modern information technology and infrastructure to innovate the customer service paradigm, and, thus, to enhance the competitiveness of a manufacturing enterprise. Being the key issue of this area, the problem of remote access to industrial equipment will be explored in this paper. A general Internet-based solution for remote access to industrial equipment, which consists of a service provider (SP), a service receiver (SR), and Internet-based communication media (CM), is proposed. The realization technology and implementation procedure are then illustrated with a trial system. With the help of established worldwide remote access via the Internet in the trial system, the possible applications that can support various manufacturing-oriented teleservices, such as telemonitoring, telemaintenance, tele-file-management, and telealarm are further discussed and realized.
