ULF HANNERZ is at the Institute of Ethnography, University of Stockholm, Sweden. He has done field work among lower-class Negroes in connection with the Urban Language Study project of the Center for Applied Linguistics, Washington, D.C., 1966-8. The study on which this paper is based was made possible in part by a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York to that project.
