Mobile multi-service data in TETRA PMR

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses mobile multimedia computing and an examination of whether it exists now in wireless mobile communications networks. The categorization of current standards is considered, followed by an overview of requirements and mobile data architectures, focusing on the ETSI Trans-European Trunked Radio Architecture as an example. Next, the chapter discusses mobility with a case study of Mobile IP and CDPD as illustration. A comparison of this with other evolving technologies and a view of the future conclude the chapter. Convergence of telecommunications and computer networking includes wireless mobile communications networks. It is necessary to take account of QoS, seamless integration, mobility, and intermittency in a uniform way. Data communications protocols and associated routing systems do not accommodate roaming. Data services are not provided uniformly in mobile communications networks. Only the most recent PMR standard makes more than a token effort toward integrated multiservice provision.
