Personal Narratives on War: A Challenge to Women's Essays and Ethnography in Croatia

This article discusses how Croatian women's ethnographic and literary portrayals of war experiences depends upon the ability to "translate" war-induced tragedies into postmodern theoretical concerns and textual creativity. Whereas both discourses incorporate traces of lived encounters with violence, pain, and disillusion, as well as the dispute over the possibility of representing Voiceless victims, they offer opposing concepts of identity, hybridity, rootlessness and trauma.
