Abstract The paper discusses.the vandalism at one of the most important heritage sites in Zimbabwe. The paint attack on the Domboshava site is reviewed against a background of antagonistic relationships between official heritage organizations and local community interests. The paper emphasizes the need to define heritage values in order to make sure that all the stakeholders' interests are upheld. It also highlights the fact that heritage is always contested and that as a resource it cannot be separated from peoples' lives.
