Summary The article reports about the project 'The graphics calculator in mathematics education', that has been carried out by the Freudenthal institute between August 1991 and September 1994. The realistic view on mathematics education was a starting point for the formulation of the hypotheses. The developmental research design was used. The observations of students' behaviour during experimental lessons support the assumption that the graphics calculator can stimulate - the use of realistic contexts - the explorative and dynamic approach of mathematics - a more integrated view on mathematics - a more flexible problem solving behavior. 1.
