A mathematical model of intestinal motor activity.

Abstract A mathematical model describing the dynamics of intestinal wall and accounting for its large deformations is presented. The model makes reference to an isolated gut segment in a preparation well known in experimental physiology. A simplified representation of the functional characteristics of the smooth muscle and of the contraction process was used at the present stage. This model should help to analyse the mechanisms controlling the contraction of the intestinal wall and to evaluate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for cases of motility disorders.
