This exploratory research was intended to develop and test a pattern for the lower front bodice based upon quasi-conic surfaces having a hyperelliptical cross section. Data came from measurements of rigid body forms and from somatographs of these forms. Patterns calculated and plotted by computer were compared with patterns draped on the body forms. Experimental patterns based on rectangular cross sections were used to explore further the geometric nature of the body forms. Although reasonably good fit was obtained for some forms, quality of fit was limited by difficulties in obtaining consistent data from measurements and somatographs. Analysis of patterns generated helped to explain some limitations of using angle measurements from somatographs for pattern alteration.
