Comparison of Event-Triggered and Time-Triggered Concepts with Regard to Distributed Control Systems

This paper compares event-triggered and time-triggered concepts from the control theory point of view. For that purpose, the requirements of distributed control systems are summarized and advantages and disadvantages of both concepts are elaborated by hand of dierent criteria. These are, for instance, the ability to react to asynchronous events, the system design and scheduling, the synchronization problem, and the compensation of latency and jitter in the control loop. The results are highlighted with the aid of theoretical examinations and real measurements based on the event-triggered CAN and its time-triggered version TTCAN.
