The ideas that inspired the revolution in Nicaragua had their roots in the national past, in the history of a nation that strove to free itself from foreign domination and internal despotism. Sandinismo became the repository of national consciousness. It represented the culmination of a long process that finally allowed the Nicaraguan people to gain an understanding of their own history.
