Modeling requirements for transient stability studies for wind parks

In areas where large wind parks are connected to the transmission system, utilities typically require that wind turbines satisfy an established low voltage ride through (LVRT) requirement, that is, they must remain connected and support the system for normally cleared disturbances. This paper discuses and compares the average and full electromagnetic models for the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG). The models are compared for their response to three phase faults and the differences in results are discussed. Moreover, aggregation of generators is compared with detailed models of the wind park to investigate the influence of the contribution of the individual generators and their local protection features. The results are summarized and a discussion on the tradeoffs of the computational requirements versus accuracy of results is offered
