Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia in British Columbia: a comprehensive program for detection, diagnosis, and treatment.

Abstract Previous reviews (D. A. Boyes, T. M. Nichols, A. M. Millner, and A. J. Worth, Amer. J. Obstet. Gynecol. 128 , 692–693 (1977); The Walton Report: Cervical cancer screening program, Canad. Med. Assoc. J. 114 , 1–32 (1976)) of the provincial cytology screening program data have demonstrated a dramatic reduction in both incidence and mortality rates for invasive squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix in British Columbia and leave little doubt as to the value of cytologic screening. The addition of a centrally directed colposcopy program to the cytology screening program provides a unique system within the Canadian provinces. This integrated system appears to be working well and we believe that the addition of the colposcopy program will result in even greater benefits for the women of the province.
