Beyond response surfaces: recent developments in optimum experimental design

Abstract This paper emphasizes recent developments in optimum experimental design which lead to a variety of applications. These include non-standard problems in response surface design, such as restricted design regions, designs when there are both continuous and discrete factors, the blocking of designs and robustness of designs against trend. Extensions are to mixture designs and designs for the estimation of variance. A last group of topics includes designs for nonlinear models and design criteria incorporating prior information and multiple objectives. The importance of algorithms for the construction of designs is stressed.
