System reset of transversal strapdown INS for ship in polar region

Abstract Transversal coordinate system has been proposed to replace local-level coordinate system to solve the problem of navigation in polar region for strapdown Inertial Navigation System (INS). The error analysis for transversal strapdown INS reveals the fact that errors of the navigation quantity would drift as time going on. To restrain the error drift, system reset is necessary. However, existing system reset methods are not applicable for transversal strapdown INS. To solve this problem, a novel system reset method for transversal strapdown INS is proposed in this paper. The mechanization of transversal strapdown INS is considered. The Psi equation of transversal strapdown INS is derived in inertial space, and the whole system reset algorithm is constructed based on transversal strapdown INS mechanization. Theoretical analysis and numerical results indicate the validity of the proposed system reset method for transversal strapdown INS.
