Comments on Robert Yates and Dennis Muchisky's “On Reconceptualizing Teacher Education” Readers React … Common Misconceptions About the Quiet Revolution

N We appreciate the attention that Yates and Muchisky gave our work in "On Reconceptualizing Teacher Education" (Vol. 37, No. 1, Spring 2003). Over the past several years, they have argued that our work (e.g., Freeman c Freeman, 1989;Johnson, 2002, 2003) is misdirecting the field by distracting from the core place of language, linguistics, and second language acquisition (SLA) and blurring what Yates and Muchisky hold as key distinctions between teacher preparation and learning in language teaching compared with that in other subjects. These authors are not alone in their concerns. Tarone and Allwright (in press) have raised related questions, principally over what they see as the uniqueness of language as subject matter, which they do not find adequately addressed in our framework (Freeman &Johnson, 1998). We welcome this level of discussion because we believe it serves to elaborate
