Erfahrungsbericht Verkehrsmonitoring Baden-Wuerttemberg 2010 / Field report traffic survey Baden-Wuerttemberg 2010

(A) ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH: Side radar technology has been used for traffic counting, speed measurement and classification surveys by a federal state in Germany as the only technique employed for a large scale statutory survey for the first time. In Baden-Wuerttemberg traffic counts were undertaken using mobile traffic counters installed in standard roadside posts. These posts can be seen every 50 m on either side of most German roads and provide an ideal location to place counters so that motorists are not aware of them and do not therefore modify their driving behaviour because of the counters. The duration of the traffic counts (speed, numbers, classification et all) at the selected locations were continuous for either a single week or two, separate, weeks. As a result traffic information is now available for about 3,140 monitoring locations on rural and municipal roads throughout the state (roughly 85 percent of all available monitoring positions on these road categories). In addition traffic counts at roughly 490 locations on the federal roads (motorways and other principal routes) were also conducted. This article describes the boundary conditions and the experiences gained from the counting operation. As an example some of the results from 2010 are presented as well. (A)
