The Infant Brain

Months before a baby is born, all 10 billion neurons that will constitute its adult brain are already in place. Neurons cannot divide as other cells do, but an infant’s brain still grows significantly in the first two years. Most of that growth results from further development of the rich network of interconnections (axons and dendrites) and surrounding tissue that supports and insulates the neurons (Figure 9).
