China's bold climate pledge earns praise-but is it feasible?

Chinese President Xi Jinping surprised the world last week with a pledge to peak the country9s emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060. A Tsinghua University group followed up with a proposed road map that provided details of how the goals could be achieved. Tsinghua9s plan calls for phasing out coal-fired power generation by 2050 and ramping up nuclear and renewable alternatives. Climate scientists welcomed Xi9s pledge, saying it could not only contribute to keeping global warming between 1.5°C and 2°C, targets set in the 2015 Paris agreement, but set an example for other countries. They also warn that China faces daunting economic and technical challenges reaching the targets.
