Direct Terahertz Communications with Wireless and Fiber Links

Terahertz (THz) wireless communication technology has been nominated as a viable means to accommodate the rapidly increasing demand for wireless data traffic due to large untapped bandwidths. THz fiber links offer a complementary capability, as they can be used to transmit data in non-line-of-sight. Here, we demonstrate that a THz wireless link can be interfaced directly with a THz fiber link, for future advanced communication systems that leverage the strengths of both approaches. We have successfully demonstrated 8 Gbit/s error free transmission, as well as uncompressed high-definition 4K video transmission in the proposed system, both using a}carrier frequency of 0.33 THz.
