Choice Decision and the Anticipation of Events

There is considerable confusion about the domain of decision making. Sometimes the term is used rather precisely as in the case of probabilistic and stochastic treatments. Other times it can appear in a more parsimonious scenario, as when it is inferred in most areas of psychology. In fact one could be forgiven for suggesting that it could stand as a synonym for psychology. Virtually all of our psychological processes are involved in some sophisticated choice reaction-time task, or a discrimination learning task, solving a problem, detecting a signal, perceiving some object or person, or identifying some unusual (or usual!) personality. We are all very busy processing information, the object of which is to make some judgment, to choose and eventually to decide (or not to decide). Lockhead suggests that perhaps we should study “choice and decision behaviour in cognitive processing, rather than the reverse” (Wallsten, 1980, p. xi).
