Control of VSC HVDC system integrated with AC network

This paper identifies potential problems in integrating a point to point voltage source converter based HVDC system to an AC network. The AC network utilizes the classical two-area system where all generators are equipped with voltage and damping controls. A detailed model of the VSC transmission system and its control are provided. For simplicity, the windfarm is modelled as a negative load with controllable active and reactive power. The operation principles of the proposed system are described and the primary focus is to find out the potential problems in the interactions of the control strategies used in the AC network generators and the DC terminal converters. Simulation results are obtained and presented to illustrate the control performance of the system under various disturbances. (6 pages)
