Characterization of the spatial variability of mill tailings hydraulic properties: A statistical and geostatistical analysis

This paper describes a study of an abandoned lead-zinc tailings impoundment in west-central New Mexico. The method of tailing deposition at this site was an upstreaming peripheral discharge system. Generally, this type of system produces a sedimentary structure that coarsens vertically upward and fines laterally away from the emitters. The use of galvanized thin wall samples (shelby tubes) recovered with the aid of a drilling rig was the most advantageous method of sampling.
