Modal Identification of Linear State Space Models

Abstract The modal identification method developed by Gavalas [1,2] is used to construct state-space models from experimental and simulated response data for a pilot scale evaporator. In Gavalas’ method both the system order n and the coefficient matrices are estimated from noisy input/output data. The successful experimental application and the simulation results for 3rd, 5th and 10th order models illustrate the feasibility of Gavalas’ method and provide insight into practical considerations such as the effect of noise level.
