Simplified design of crane girders with open cross sections subjected to biaxial bending and torsion

Publisher Summary Simplified design formulae used as interaction formulae for members are still popular, needed and therefore, they are included in the European code EN 1993-1-1 too. Method B in EC 3, better known as level 1 method, is elaborated in the chapter for the daily use of practioners. But here in EC 3 as well as in the German stability code DIN 18800-2, the case of regular torsion is not covered, which occurs in the case of crane girders. Some approximations are given in literature, but no test results can be used to check the reliability of a solution. Therefore, the question of regular torsion is dealt with in a research project that was carried out at the universities of RWTH Aachen, RU Bochum, and TU Berlin. In total, 71 full-scale tests were carried out and additionally, FEM calculations were done. The chapter discusses the report on the tests carried out at TU Berlin on beams subjected to biaxial bending and torsion, about the ultimate load calculations, and the development of a simplified design formula. The application to crane girders is shown in the chapter using an example.
