Basics of Wind Power Generation System

This chapter introduces the basic knowledge related to modern wind power generation system (WPS), especially for the variable‐speed WPS. It explains the important parts of the configuration of a WPS. The chapter investigates the steady‐state operation conditions of a variable‐speed wind turbine and also introduces the control of the generator and power converter in different concepts of variable‐speed WPSs. With the variable‐speed wind turbine, the wind energy capture ability can be extended with a higher system efficiency. The generator control is normally achieved by the power converter in the wind power system and the electromagnetic torque can be controlled by adjusting the rotor speed of the wind turbine at different wind speeds. The chapter discusses the wind power transmission system and analyzes the grid faults and distortions in power systems. It shows a conventional control scheme of doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) power converters.
