ArchiVISTA : a new horizon in providing access to visual records of the national archives of Canada

In order to make more accessible to researchers and the general public the 20,000 editorial cartoons and caricatures in its holdings, the National Archives of Canada developed an optical disc imaging system called ArchiVISTA which merges high resolution imaging technology with the power and flexibility of a fourth generation database language. The authors present a case study of this pilot project after birefly outlining earlier developments in bibliographic control and imaging technology as applied to the National Archives of Canada's graphic records
