A technique for compensating for image retention is to use a bimodal reading exposure images (104) and dark (102) alternating. The bimodal readout technique is the result of faster reading or exposure images (104) is of dark images (102), which allows to allocate more time for X-ray exposures (116) carried out before the exposure images (104) or to another read operation. Bimodal reading can be performed by a grouping procedure by which the scanning lines are grouped together and read out, typically during playback of a dark image (102). The images acquired by reading the dark frame (102) can then be used to compensate for image retention artifacts present in the image obtained from the exposure images (104).
