Molecular mechanism of contraction.

This review is an attempt to summarize critically significant, recent contribu tions to our understanding of the molecular mechanism of muscle contraction and cell motility; it does not cover all the work on muscle contraction. Nat urally, the authors have tended to emphasize their own interests and their own approaches to the problem. Moreover, important aspects of the physiology and biochemistry of muscle contraction have been neglected unless they are imme diately related to the interpretation of muscle contraction at a molecular level. It is hoped that the interested reader will refer to references (1-13) for a general description of the physiology and biochemistry of muscle.
