Growth trends in area and productivity affecting maize production in Jammu & Kashmir

For the period 1970–71 to 1999–2000, the growth in area, production and yield crop in the J&K state has shown increasing trend. But, decade wise study maize has increased at the rate of 0.91 per cent but the other variables viz. yield and production showed declining trends. As per the results of the present study, the relative contribution of change in area (79.19 per cent) worked out to be highest as compared to yield (20.47 per cent) and interaction effect (0.33 per cent) on the maize production. Moreover, the fluctuations in maize production and its yield were aslo found to be more, which needs to be stabilized. Thus instead of enhancing maize acreage our main motive should be to increase the yield with the adoptation of latest technology and by using good quality of certified seeds of high yielding varieties of maize with large productivity potential.
