Circuit architecture solution for background charge fluctuations in single electron tunneling transistors

A new approach to information process- ing with single electron tunneling (SET) circuits is described. One of the intrinsic problems of SET circuits is to overcome background charge fluctua- tions that shifts the SET transfer function randomly. A variable capacitor is used to change the transfer function by the signals applied to the transistor (1). When this transfer function is changed, the output signal of the SET transistor will also change. The generated output signal contains redundancy in in- formation to cope with the background charge prob- lem. The proposed building block can be used to perform binary computations.
