SUMMARY A model including polynomial and trigonometric terms useful in describing mortality and meteorological data is discussed. The appropriate analysis of variance for the cases with and without missing observations is presented. A comparison of the residulals from the least squares and two-stage solutions is made with indications that the least squares solution tends to yield errors consistent with the assumptions of independence and normality.
