This article deals with the impact of changes in technology, notably as far as energy and materials are concerned, on the location patterns in Europe of the oil-refining and petrochemical industry.The paper is divided into two parts: a general description of the industry focusing on such aspects as history, relevant technologies, and major actors, and a discussion of the industry's location behaviour. We shall describe the present location of oil refineries and petrochemical industries and its development in the recent past, and go on to discuss the factors likely to shape future location.
