Capacitor voltage balancing techniques for three level capacitor clamped multilevel inverter under load compensation

This paper proposes three-level flying capacitor inverter based distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) for shunt applications. Also, two new floating capacitors voltage balancing schemes using loss balancing technique have been proposed to balance capacitor voltages. Because of benefits like simplicity, transformation less implementation, and scope of desired power factor setting; a generalized instantaneous symmetrical component theory is incorporated to extract the reference compensator current. A basic three-level hysteresis controller is used to control the injected current by inverter so that it follows its reference value. DSTATCOM is applied to a three phase four wire (3p4w) distribution network and its effective performance is demonstrated in terms of floating capacitor voltage regulation, tracking performance and load compensation. The detailed simulation study has been carried out in MATLAB/SIMULINK to validate the suggested scheme.
