Analysis of the performance of hybrid (broadcast/mobile) networks

In general, a l7yhrid network is a comhination of hvo or more individiial commiinication nehwrks. Porticiilarly, the joint me of digital broadcast networks (like DVB-T/H [I]) and interactive cammimications networks (like GPRS/UMTS) is of’great interest. In order to optimize the perfbrmance of hybrid nehvorks. the characteristics ?/ the d#irein individiial networks have to be considered The broadcast network has the ahilir?: to transmit identical data to a large nirmher of clients. lIigl7 data rates are possible, b i t / there is no retiirn channel available to enoble interaction with the service provider. In c o n t r ~ ~ t . the interactive comniimications network is by definition equipped with a retiirn channel This s.ystem however. can only provide a relatively low transmission data rate in the dowistream. By employing a smart access management a hvbrid network can he achieved being more efficient than any o/ the individirol networks. In this paper, an algorithm for smart acce.~s management is introdirced. Snbseqirentl,v, the perfiirmunce of’ the hybrid network is sinnrlated and onal,i.ed.’ Index Terms DVB-H, hybrid networks, cost function, access management, IP datacast.
