Studies on Turkey Body Composition 1. Increasing Carcass Fat and Finish by Administration of Diethylstilbestrol and the Estimation of Carcass fat using Specific Gravity

Abstract SINCE the early work of Lorenz (1944) which reported a slight improvement in fleshing and finish of turkeys administered diethylstilbestrol, a number of investigations have been reported which utilized various modifications of this original technique. In general, studies have involved methods of using diethylstilbestrol for finishing turkey broilers generally in a range of 11 to 15 weeks of age (Davis and Thayer, 1948; Thayer and Davis, 1948; Smyth and Vondell, 1955; Adams, 1957; Creger et al., 1960). The results reported by these workers demonstrated that implantation was the most effective means of administration of the drug. It was found that diethylstilbestrol implantation was effective in increasing gain as well as market finish of turkeys when administered either as a pellet or paste form.
