Electrical performance of fiberglass crossarm in distribution and transmission lines

An investigation of the electrical performance of the fiberglass crossarm for distribution and transmission lines is presented. This paper shows data from fiberglass crossarms obtained at the Mississippi State University High Voltage Laboratory as based on the AC voltage and the CFO voltage under dry and wet condition. The structure and electrical properties are briefly explained. Different lengths of the fiberglass crossarm were tested, and their electrical performances are demonstrated. According to the test results, the fiberglass crossarm cannot be used as a single component in the insulation system. It has to be installed with insulators as a multi-insulation system to improve the lightning insulation strength of distribution and transmission lines. With advantages, fiberglass crossarm can be used in place of wood crossarm.
