Instrumentation of ICT-tools : the case of algebra in a computer algebra environment

This paper describes a classroom experiment using hand held computer algebra for the learning of algebra. During a five week period students of the ninth grade (14-15 years old) used a symbolic calculator for solving systems of equations that contained parameters. In doing so, the aim was to develop the conception of a parameter as a means for generalization. The instrumentation schemes for the mathematical tasks involved, however, were not easy to the students. The appropriate use of the technology seemed to be closely related to the understanding of the mathematical concepts behind the procedures. The idea of the instrumentation of information and communications technology tools turned out to be fruitful in the interpretation of the students’ behaviour.
