PREDICTION TO EXTREME VALUES OF IMPACT PRESSURES ASSOCIATED WITH SHIP SLAMMING

A method for predicting the magnitude of the largest (extreme value of) impact pressure associated with ship slamming was developed by applying order statistics. Formulas were obtained to estimate (a) the most probable value of the extreme pressure, and (b) the magnitude of pressure having a preassigned probability of being exceeded in n observations. These formulas were programmed for the IBM 7090 computer. This program may be used together with existing ship motion prediction programs so that the seaworthiness characteristics of a ship can be predicted in the design stage.
