Operational characteristics of SMES and its effects on microgrids

This paper firstly introduces the principle and structure of voltage source typed power conditioning system (PCS). And then it studies the direct power control method of PWM voltage source converter which is applied in the voltage typed superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) system. A proper switching vector table is used in the proposed control method, and a direct power control method for SMES chopper is also proposed. By means of active power, the direct power control methods of voltage source converter and chopper are unified and can be used for the SMES system. Simulation results show that the mentioned control strategies possess good control performances, and prove that the SMES can modulate the microgrid system voltage, balance the power flow, and secure the stable operation of the system.
