Bear Necessities: Bear Mountain Bridge Cable Replacement

New York State's Bear Mountain Bridge is a 498 m long main span suspension structure that was built in 1924. The bridge is on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Work to rehabilitate the main cables of the bridge was done five years ago. Although the engineers working on that project found the corrosion damage much more severe than had been predicted, the stabilization was completed. This article examines the plans that have been since developed for the replacement of the main cables should the need arise.
