Data management for mobile computing on the Internet

Rapid advances in mobile computing devices and the availability of cellular communications will soon provide mobile users the ability to access information regardless of the location of the user or of the information. Mobile computers, such as laptops and palmtops, are being equipped with a wireless connections to information networks and the Internet. Previous transaction processing models for mobile computing have not explicitly considered transaction relocation as an integral part of the requirements for mobile transactions. We present two types of relocation policies, the first for relocating a transaction to a different mobile host than the originating host, and the other for relocating the coordinating host for a transaction in response to client mobility. To manage replicated data we present a regeneration algorithm that maintains consistency of data in mobile systems.
