Intense fluorodeoxyglucose activity in pulmonary amyloid lesions on positron emission tomography.

Imaging with F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) has been widely accepted as an important diagnostic modality in the evaluation of patients with possible cancers. However, FDG is not a tumor-specific tracer and numerous nonmalignant processes can result in increased FDG accumulation. Amyloidosis includes a group of diseases in which 1 or more organ systems in the body accumulates deposits of a substance of proteinaceous nature. We report the detection of an amyloid lesion by FDG-PET in a patient with suspected lung malignancy.
