Abstract Single crystals of Li 2 B 4 O 7 , substrate material for surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices, have been grown by the Czochralski technique. The length of the crystals was up to 60 mm and the diameter up to 15 mm. Regions with inverted orientation were found by chemical etching. The density of dislocations, as revealed by etch pits, was 9 × 10 3 cm −2 . Properties of some simple SAW devices are presented.
